New Browser in Windows 10 not IE.

Longtime Microsoft observer Mary Jo Foley at ZDNet expanded on the tweet, citing unnamed sources who said Internet Explorer 11, the default browser in Windows 8.1, would still be present for backward compatibility.

The new browser is codenamed “Spartan,” according to Foley.

The switch from IE to Spartan appears to be more an exercise in rebranding rather than a big technical change. The new browser will still use Microsoft’s Chakra JavaScript engine as well as its Trident rendering engine, Foley says, rather than a nonproprietary engine such as WebKit. (Apple’s Safari uses WebKit and Google Chrome is based on a “fork” of the open-source software called Blink.)

Spartan will look and feel more like Chrome and Firefox, however, and it will support extensions, according to Foley’s report. The “lightweight” browser will be available on both desktop and mobile devices in Windows 10.

Microsoft is due to reveal many of the new features in Windows 10 at a Jan. 21 event in the company’s hometown of Redmond, Washington. Spartan may make its formal debut there, but the general release of Windows 10 isn’t expected until the fall, so it may come at a later date.

Rebranding the official Windows browser makes a great deal of sense. Internet Explorer has a poor reputation among developers and users, much of it rooted in Microsoft’s traditional preference for proprietary tools over open standards. Although that stance has changed considerably since the early days of IE, the stigma is so great that Microsoft recently made an ad explaining that the browser’s poor reputation isn’t deserved.

Still, IE took some time to adopt certain standards (such as WebGL) and it suffers from a non-intuitive split experience in Windows 8 and 8.1, with one browser for the desktop and another for the “Modern” UI

Famous sites gitHub,codepad, webs blocked in India

India’s Department of Telecom, which seems to have a penchant for blocking genuine and reliable websites just on the basis of a complaint, has struck again. And this time it has blocked 32 websites. The list of the blocked websites include Vimeo, which is a YouTube like video host, and Github, a website used by software developers to host and share programming code.

In an order apparently issued on December 16, the DoT has directed internet service providers to block 32 websites. Unlike in the past when such directives have targeted file-sharing websites, this time websites that allow users to share URLs are primary victims. Apart from Vimeo and GitHub, Pastebin, Archive.org, Pastie, CryptBin are among the list of banned URLs.

The order was shared on Twitter by Pranesh Prakash, policy director at Bangalore-based Centre for Internet and Society.

Blocked Websites

The order says that if internet service providers don’t comply with the demand they are liable to attract penalty.

This is not the first time a number of genuine and harmless websites have been blocked in India. Earlier, acting on flimsy complaints, courts in India have ordered mass blocking of websites.

While almost all these orders blocking websites seem arbitrary the latest one is particularly incredulous.

“Thanks DoT India on blocking @github @pastebin and @imgur. Block such services in a country where most of IT work is outsourced. #Irony,” a Twitter user commented.

Update: Arvind Gupta, national head of BJP4’s IT Cell, on Twitter said that the websites have been blocked due to security reasons.

“The websites that have been blocked were based on an advisory by Anti Terrorism Squad, and were carrying Anti India content from ISIS,” he said. “The sites that have removed objectionable content and/or cooperated with the on going investigations, are being unblocked.”

While it is possible that security reasons led to blocking of websites, it doesn’t explain why popular sites like Vimeo and Github, which hosts computer code and is used by thousands of developers and technology companies, are blocked. Also, it doesn’t explain why websites like Twitter and Facebook, where ISIS routinely posts content, are not blocked.

Voice Call in WhatsApp

Voice calling on instant messaging apps is nothing new but the feature has yet to come to Whatsapp. We know that the company is working on it but no official release has been made by the developer yet. However, a few screenshots of what seems to be a new build of the Whatsapp app with voice calling have been spotted by Androidworld.nl.

Whatsapp-voice-calls-coming-soon-2

The alleged screenshots show what could be the the future calling features of Whatsapp. The update could still be in beta version so it’s not released on the Google Play Store. There seems to be separate screens for call logs and ongoing calls and dialling a voice call. We’re not sure if these images are legit but we don’t doubt that there is a beta build somewhere. The only question now is when the official version would roll out.

Whatsapp voice calls coming soon

There seems to be a delay now according to Jan Koum, CEO of Whatsapp. No thanks to some “technical hurdles” the developers are currently facing. Since 2014 is drawing to a close, we could expect a Q1 2015 release. This would bring WhatsApp in a close fight with Line, Viber, and WeChat that already allows voice calling and especially that Whatsapp is the biggest instant messaging app today with 600 million active users.

Pattern Lock in Windows phone

Windows Phone’s evolution has taken yet another step forward, albeit not through official means as developer Fela Ameghino has incorporated pattern unlock into the Live Lock Screen introduced with Windows Phone 8.1.

The feature, still in beta, brings WP one step closer to matching its Android counterpart. Video after the break.
